Ambition required to deliver 338 potential homes at Stanley and Dorset Street schemes – Fitzpatrick

Fianna Fáil Senator and Spokesperson on Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Mary Fitzpatrick, has called for the “acceleration” of the delivery of 338 homes in Dublin Central.

Senator Fitzpatrick identified the potential for 175 homes at a Dublin City Council (DCC) site at Stanley Street and stressed the need for construction to commence as quickly as possible on the development of an additional 163 homes as part of the regeneration of the Dorset Street flats in Dublin 7.

Recently in Seanad Éireann, Senator Fitzpatrick requested an update from government on the Stanley Street development. The development is at a former DCC site on Stanley Street that has been earmarked for homes under the Housing for All plan. Government informed Senator Fitzpatrick that the construction of homes at Stanley Street is due to begin in 2025.

Senator Fitzpatrick said: While Housing for All is making progress in delivering the homes that people need, the timeframe for delivery on the Stanley Street scheme is simply not good enough and I am also concerned by the fact there are no affordable homes set to be included in the development. The reality is that we are in a housing crisis and these homes are urgently needed. It is imperative that the Department of Housing engages with Dublin City Council and the private providers of the scheme to accelerate the delivery of 175 social and affordable homes on the site.”

Also in Seanad Éireann, Senator Fitzpatrick requested an update on the redevelopment of the Dorset Street flats, which, once complete, will provide 163 new homes as well as crèche and community facilities.

Senator Fitzpatrick was informed by government that the redevelopment is currently progressing through the eTenders platform on the tender process for the appointment of a contractor to the project and it is anticipated that work will commence onsite in 2024.

Senator Fitzpatrick said: The flats at Dorset Street have been earmarked for regeneration since 2012 so it is great to finally see progress. Their regeneration will provide over 160 much needed homes for the people of Dublin Central, where homes have not been built in over a decade.

Housing in Dublin simply cannot wait for long-term projects anymore. Ambition is required to deliver homes as quickly as possible and I am calling for the Department of Housing to review what it will need to accelerate the delivery of these desperately needed 338 homes in the city.”
