Byrne welcomes the establishment of expert group tasked with examining online complaints mechanism  - Urged to look at Australian model

Fianna Fáil Senator Malcolm Byrne has welcomed the establishment of an expert group by Minister Catherine Martin to examine the possibility of providing for an individual complaints mechanism in the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill.

He is urging the new group to examine the Australian e-Safety Commission’s complaints model as a basis for such a scheme here.

Senator Byrne said, “Our primary function as legislators is to ensure the safety and security of people resident here. That applies as much in the online space as it does in the public space. I am glad to see Minister Martin announce the expert group as this was something we strongly recommended as part as our work in the Oireachtas Media Committee”.

“The Australian e-safety commissioner has successfully operated a direct complaints system for the past six years for a population of 26 million people. I look forward to seeing the group’s findings.”
