Statement from Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD

Published on: 05 June 2020

Earlier today, I convened a special meeting of the Fianna Fáil Ard Chomhairle. In 2012, I introduced reform of the Party’s rules to ensure that for the first time, the membership of our party would be given the opportunity to decide on whether we would proceed with a proposed Programme for Government at a special Ard Fheis.

With the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, such an Ard Fheis cannot be convened. Therefore, today, I tabled an amendment to our rules by way of special motion which stipulated that in the event of a Programme for Government being agreed with Fine Gael and the Green Party, the membership of our party would be given the opportunity to consider such a programme by means of a postal ballot.

Following a constructive and engaged discussion, this motion secured the unanimous support of the Fianna Fáil Ard Chomhairle.
