Aindrias Moynihan seeks firm commitment on driving license issue for 70–75-year-olds

Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West, Aindrias Moynihan has called on the Minister for Transport to fast-track legislation that will increase the age limit for 70 to 75-year-olds who were renewing their drivers’ licences and would need medical certificates as a matter of urgency.

Speaking in the Dáil this week, Deputy Moynihan commented, “There was agreement made on legislation with the expectation that this would be delivered earlier this year. The Road Safety Authority was reviewing the draft legislation and it was being sent on to parliamentary counsel. However, this deadline has not been met and I have therefore called on the Minister to give an urgent update on the situation to ease the feeling of uncertainty for those impacted.”

The Cork North West TD added: “In response, the Minister has informed me that they hope that the new regulation will be in place by February 2022. I have been contacted by many people who are waiting to renew their licence. Their dates are up now or will be fairly shortly but they are holding off on renewal, pending this change.

“I have asked for clarity on where they stand and I will continue to be in contact with the department to have this issue resolved as soon as possible. It really is a case of getting this provision available as quickly as possible because it is a very practical and positive measure.”
