Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice and Equality, Jim O’ Callaghan has said the seizure of more than €1.5m of cocaine is a strong reminder of the drugs epidemic currently being experienced in Ireland.

Two men in their 20s were arrested on Monday at Rosslare Europort by gardaí and are being detained in Wexford Garda station.

Deputy O’Callaghan said: “This large seizure was made following routine profiling by Revenue officials, with the assistance of mobile X-ray scanners and a detector dog. The work by Revenue is hugely important to stop large quantities of drugs being circulated into the drugs market.

We need to see investment in youth development and community-based drug treatment programmes. These are essential to guide people away from drug use while rehabilitating those that are trapped in it. Tackling the country’s crippling drug problem requires major reform and every day we hear stories of individuals, families and communities that have been left devastated by drugs and the violence with which it is associated.

Drug use, be it recreational or caused by addiction, is a social and public health crisis that has been ignored for too long,” concluded Deputy O’Callaghan.
