Tipp Carers need guidance on COVID19 protocols – Cahill

Fianna Fáil TD for Tipperary Jackie Cahill has called on the government to set out clear guidelines for carers during the COVID19 pandemic.

He says many carers have contacted him to say they feel unsupported and ignored during the current crisis.

“This is a particularly difficult time for carers across Tipperary. Many are worried about contracting the virus and then giving it to the person they’re caring for, and they want to see clear guidelines set out so that they can be more confident about undertaking their daily duties”, said Deputy Cahill.

“There is a lot of confusion about what a carer is to do if they or someone in their household contracts the virus, or what is best practice if someone is displaying symptoms. In many cases there is no one else to care for their loved one and carers are unsure what they should do or who they should contact.

“Carers also need access to PPE. There have been issues with the lack of PPE in recent weeks but hopefully that will be resolved with the consignments coming in from China this week. It’s important that carers are provided with hand sanitiser, gloves and aprons, especially as they are dealing with vulnerable people.

“We need to ensure that our carers, who are integral to our health system, are fully supported during this difficult time”.
