Senator Lisa Chambers Welcomes Significant Funding for Ireland West Airport Knock

Published on: 25 April 2024

Senator Lisa Chambers, Fianna Fáil European Election candidate for the Midlands-Northwest constituency, has today welcomed the allocation of €3.666 million to Ireland West Airport Knock, as part of the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025. This programme, designed to support Ireland's regional airports that handle fewer than one million annual passengers, provides targeted funding to ensure these airports can maintain safety, security, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The funding is also directed towards sustainability projects, encouraging airports to reduce emissions and build resilience to climate change.

The investment in Ireland West Airport Knock is particularly significant as it includes major upgrades to electrical infrastructure, new fire safety training facilities, and the purchase of essential fire tender vehicles, amongst other important projects. This capital investment is a testament to the government's commitment to regional connectivity and the vitality of smaller airports.

Senator Chambers has reaffirmed her intention to prioritise the development of Ireland West Airport Knock at the European level if elected. "This funding boost is a leap forward for our region, enhancing not just the airport's facilities but also securing its future as a central hub for international travel, tourism, and business. I will continue to advocate for such crucial investments, ensuring that our regional infrastructure meets the demands of growth and progress," said Senator Chambers.

This announcement follows Minister of State at the Department of Transport Jack Chambers' confirmation of over €11 million in direct Exchequer support to Irish regional airports, highlighting the government's increased allocation to support the operational costs in safety and security for 2023, up by 4.5% from the previous year.
