Ryan calls on Minister to tackle A&E overcrowding at UHL

Local Fianna Fáil Senator Dee Ryan has called on the Minister for Health to urgently outline the measures being taken to address the chronic overcrowding in the Accident & Emergency department at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) ahead of the winter period.
Senator Ryan raised her concerns in the Seanad, highlighting the ongoing crisis at UHL and the severe pressure on A&E services. She pointed out that the Midwest region has the lowest number of consultants per 100,000 population compared to all other health regions in the country.
"As winter 2025 looms, the people of Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary are deeply worried about what they may face at UHL's A&E. We need to know what immediate steps are being taken by the Minister for Health to alleviate pressure on this vital service. The chronic overcrowding must be addressed now.
"While I welcome the investment in healthcare through the new Bon Secours private hospital, there is a real fear among the people of Limerick that healthcare workers may leave UHL to take up roles in the private facility. This could deepen the crisis, leaving UHL even more understaffed and overwhelmed. The Minister must outline how the public healthcare system will be safeguarded in light of this development."
In addition, Senator Ryan has called for the Minister to provide an update on the immediate actions being undertaken, alongside implementing the recommendations from the forthcoming HIQA report. She stressed the importance of providing clear assurances to the communities in Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary that emergency healthcare services will be adequately prepared to meet winter demands.
"People in our region deserve to know that the healthcare of their loved ones will be prioritised, and that emergency services will be accessible and effective when they are needed most. The time to act is now," concluded Senator Ryan.
