The plans include the development of a new two-theatre surgical hub and the addition of 30 ambulatory day oncology chairs (15 new and 15 replacement), which will greatly enhance surgical and cancer treatment capacity for the North-West.
“This is a hugely positive step for healthcare in Donegal and the wider region,” Pat the Cope said. “Patients deserve timely access to vital surgical and oncology services, and today’s announcement marks real progress towards delivering that.”
He stressed that it will now be critical for both the HSE and the Department of Health to fully support the LUH team in progressing these projects through all stages, keeping to an extremely tight deadline for delivery. He also emphasised the need for financial commitments to be ring-fenced to guarantee that these projects are completed on time for the people of Donegal.
The new surgical hub will be designed for future expansion to meet long-term needs, and a full Development Control Plan will be commissioned for the hospital site. The HSE will now progress the design phase and planning applications to bring these projects forward as quickly as possible.
Pat the Cope concluded: “This investment will make a real and lasting difference to people’s lives. It represents hope for better, faster care closer to home, and I look forward to seeing these much-needed services become a reality for patients and families in our community. My commitment to improving services and care in Letterkenny University Hospital is total, and I have made that clear to all Government parties throughout this debate. Letterkenny needs this investment.”
