Published on: 16 February 2026

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West, John Connolly, welcomes this morning’s announcement by Minister Timmy Dooley of over €6.4 million for critical works to take place at Ros An Mhil.

Today, Minister of State for Fisheries at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Timmy Dooley TD, announced the allocation of €27 million for capital projects in Ireland's publicly owned harbours through the 2026 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme.

The aim of the programme is to continue to invest in development, modernising and sustaining Ireland’s fishery harbours and enhancing coastal infrastructure. It will support critical works, including improving safety, ensuring they are operating efficiently, enhancing environmental performance and climate resilience.

Expressing his delight about today’s announcement for Ros An Mhil, Connolly said:

“I warmly welcome €6,406,000 for Ros An Mhil here in Galway. This investment is vital for the future of Ros An Mhil and the wider coastal community. Modern, safe and efficient harbour infrastructure is critical to supporting our fishers, seafood processors and the many businesses that depend on a strong maritime economy.

He added:

“Ireland’s seafood industry supports thousands of jobs particularly in rural and coastal areas. Investment in harbour infrastructure is essential to maintaining the important economic contribution and enabling growth for the sector.

Deputy Connolly understands the concerns over recent quota cuts and says Minister Dooley has established a task force on the issue – ‘Food Vision Seafood Sector’ and it met for the first time today in Howth Fishery Harbour Centre where there was a full turnout of stakeholders and Government agencies. Connolly reaffirms his position to continue engaging with the Minister and stakeholders on the matter.

As part of the 2026 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme, the Local Authority Marine Infrastructure Scheme supports ready-to-go projects including pier and slipway upgrades, safety enhancements and improvements to marine leisure amenities.

The Department provides up to 75% of eligible funding, with local authorities covering the balance. Connolly welcomes the €4.3 million allocated for 2026 is in line with last year’s funding, which enabled 51 projects to be delivered.

Deputy Connolly concluded:

“By investing in Ros An Mhil and other harbours, Fianna Fáil in Government is committed to investing in coastal Ireland. Our fishing harbours are the lifeblood of coastal Ireland and today’s investment showcases that commitment.
