Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North Central Pádraig O’Sullivan says the draft Programme for Government will help first time buyers get a home, increase the number of social and affordable homes and secure a better deal for renters.

Deputy O’Sullivan explained, “Housing was one of the issues that came up time and time again when I was knocking on doors back in January. Despite the global health pandemic, which has seen our country effectively grind to a halt over the past three months, the issue of housing has not gone away.

“I am very pleased to see policies aimed at building more homes, making them more affordable and giving renters more security in their leases, prioritised in the draft Programme for Government published this week.

“Fianna Fáil’s core policies are clear to see in this document. Home ownership will be central to the government’s new strategy, and the affordable housing scheme will give more of our young people the chance to own a home at an affordable price. We will also increase the number of homes available through social housing by 10,000 a year over the next five years; with the majority being built by local authorities, Approved Housing Bodies and State agencies.

“We are also committed to a better deal for tenants, to make renting more affordable and secure by legislating for tenancies of indefinite duration, increasing Residential Tenancy Board inspections and enforcement and examining incentives for long term leasing.

“This housing plan is a new departure and has the capacity to transform our country for the better. It will be the largest state investment in housing in generations, led by Fianna Fáil”.
