‘Momentum is building for faster home delivery’ – Deputy Séamus McGrath
Published on: 16 January 2026
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Housing, Deputy Séamus McGrath has welcomed the sharp rise of new home starts in December 2025.
Data released today from the Department of Housing shows a sharp jump in new home starts in December of 3,065 units, which is double compared to the month previous. McGrath believes this is a sign of things to come as the Government unlocks the potential of the housing market.
Deputy McGrath stated he believes with the new Housing Action Plan that aims to deliver 300,000 homes up to 2030, that momentum will continue to grow in the construction sector and homes will be delivered at speed.
“The uplift in housing commencements is very positive. Over 3,000 commencements lodged in December 2025 shows momentum is growing in housing activity,” he said.
He added: “I believe this is a result of key policy changes announced by the Minister in the first year of Government, providing critical certainty in terms of the policy framework and the significant funding commitments made by Government. However, we must do more and the Government has taken action to do so.
Due to the strong increase in commencements in December that mirrors data from the AIB’s managers’ index for the Irish Construction Sector earlier this week shows that new orders returned to growth in December due to demand.
The Government’s new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2025–2030, sets out a series of measures to accelerate the adoption of Modern Methods of Construction.
Modern Methods of Construction can accelerate construction delivery by up to 40%. Data shows that from July-December 2025, Modern Method of Construction is intended to be used in 69% of homes in scheme developments. The data also showed that 44% of new apartments intend to be constructed using Modern Methods of Construction, something McGrath welcomes.
McGrath said: “The fact that the construction sector is embracing Modern Methods of Construction is also encouraging so that we can deliver much needed homes faster and more efficiently.
“Having a place to call home is one of the most basic and essential needs in life,” he said.
“In Fianna Fáil we are committed to building on the foundations laid in Housing for All, and through our new Housing Plan momentum will continue to build for faster housing delivery.
