Dee Ryan, Fianna Fáil candidate for directly elected mayor has announced that if she is elected, her proposed People and Communities Fund will support the laying of municipal all-weather pitches in the county.

She said ”‘Housing and Healthcare are my top priorities and, if elected as your Mayor, this initiative will support kids and adults to play sports and exercise no matter what the weather throws at us! A majority of sports clubs in Limerick are currently suffering recurring match cancellations and fixture backlog due to waterlogged grass pitches. This has become a recurring and increasing problem in recent winters as a result of the weather and its impact on grass pitches.

Active healthcare is a major focus for her People and Communities initiative. There is a clear necessity to improve the infrastructure for all clubs so as to provide for year-round playability. New or improved municipal facilities in key locations will make a big difference in eliminating game cancellations and training due to weather.

“Sports clubs are the backbone of rural communities throughout the county. As a Mayor of Limerick, I will work with clubs and communities who will be able to access matching funding to provide all weather pitches in conjunction with existing funding models throughout the city and county”.

Kevin Nestor of Lisnagry FC welcomed the initiative saying that “healthier, more active communities with sustainable cost-effective recreational spaces aren't just fields, they’re a smart investment in our children’s wellbeing”.
