Major Investment Secured for Monivea Woods and Galway Forest Trails under National €4 Millon Coillte Scheme – Deputy Albert Dolan

Published on: 06 August 2025

Albert Dolan TD has today welcomed a significant €4 million investment in Coillte recreational sites nationwide in 2025, with targeted funding allocated to enhance and protect woodland amenities across Galway.

The investment, announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, forms part of the Government’s ongoing strategic partnership with Coillte to improve and maintain public forest trails and outdoor amenities. A total of €2.6 million will go towards new trail infrastructure and maintenance at 169 sites, with a further €1.4 million allocated to repair damage caused by Storm Eowyn.

Deputy Dolan said:

This is fantastic news for Galway and especially for Monivea – a treasured community resource in my own village. Monivea Woods has always been a place of nature, heritage, and wellbeing for local families, walkers, and visitors. This funding will ensure it remains safe, accessible and welcoming for all.”

The 2025 allocation will directly support trail clearing, repairs, and ongoing maintenance in Monivea, alongside similar works in Aghrane, Mountbellew, Cong, Derroura, Portumna Forest Park, Derrygill, Rosturra, and Inchagoill.

Deputy Dolan continued:

Monivea and many of our local forest areas took a hit during Storm Eowyn earlier this year. I’ve been in close contact with local stakeholders and Coillte to ensure these areas receive the support they need. I’m delighted to see that reflected in this package.”

The €4 million in total funding will:

  • Support ongoing maintenance at over 160 Coillte recreational sites, including nine in Galway.
  • Fund new trail infrastructure nationwide, with priority given to safety and access.
  • Address storm-related damage at up to 200 sites across the country.

Deputy Dolan added:

This investment recognises the growing role of outdoor recreation in rural life – supporting physical and mental health, tourism, and local economies. As we implement the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy, I will continue to advocate for long-term, sustainable investment in Galway’s forests, parks, and walking trails.”

The Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht is providing up to €15 million over five years to Coillte through its strategic partnership. This initiative is key to delivering on the Government’s ‘Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors’ strategy and encouraging greater use of Ireland’s natural landscapes.
