Free HRT available from today - Comyn

Fianna Fáil Senator Alison Comyn has welcomed news that from today (June 1st)  HRT products and medicines will be completely free of charge at participating pharmacies, once prescribed by a healthcare provider.

To avail of this support, individuals simply need to be registered under the Drugs Payment Scheme.

“This is a hugely significant step forward for women’s health in Ireland,” said Senator Comyn. “Access to HRT is not just about medication—it’s about dignity, wellbeing, empowerment, and ensuring that cost is not a barrier to essential healthcare. This initiative represents real progress in recognising and responding to the healthcare needs of women, which is a key priority for Fianna Fáil in Government.”

The move comes amid growing calls for improved access to menopause-related supports, and Senator Comyn said she has heard first-hand from many women about the transformative impact of HRT on their quality of life.

“I’ve heard from so many women and I know myself how life-changing HRT can be for their physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing—especially during perimenopause and menopause,” she continued. “But the reality is, with rising costs and growing demand, it had been slipping out of reach for too many.”

She said the Government’s decision to remove cost barriers sends a powerful message, “Menopause affects every woman differently, but what’s consistent is the need for proper care and support. Access to HRT can improve mental clarity, ease physical symptoms, and help prevent long-term health complications.

“This is what meaningful progress looks like. I will continue to work with my Fianna Fáil colleagues in Government to ensure women’s health remains and absolute priority.”
