Deputy Naoise Ó Cearúil calls for Anaphylaxis to be included on Long-Term Illness Scheme

Published on: 24 September 2025

Deputy Ó Cearúil raised concerns in the Dáil about the exclusion of permanent anaphylaxis from the Long-Term Illness Scheme, which provides support for conditions requiring ongoing management.

Speaking during Oral Questions to the Minister for Health, Deputy Ó Cearúil said:

“Permanent anaphylaxis is a lifelong condition that requires constant management and access to emergency medication. Yet it is not currently listed as a qualifying condition under the Long-Term Illness Scheme, which has not been updated since the 1970s." He added that "it is critical that the government considers reviewing the scheme to ensure it reflects the needs of people living with serious, ongoing conditions.”

Minister Mary Butler acknowledged the question, confirming that the Department of Health and the HSE continually review the Long-Term Illness Scheme and that the Deputy's concerns would be brought to the department for consideration.
