A €4.9 million investment in new Irish-language digital and AI-supported projects at Dublin City University has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil’s Spokesperson on Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Naoise Ó Cearúil.
Minister for the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary today announced €4.01 million in funding over four years for DCU’s Gaois research group to expand its major national resources, including Dúchas, Logainm, Corpas, Canúint and Ainm.
An additional €900,000 over three years has been approved for the ADAPT Research Centre’s eSTÓR project, which compiles bilingual Irish–English language data for public bodies and EU translation systems.
Naoise Ó Cearúil said the investment strengthens Irish in the digital era and ensures the language remains relevant, accessible, and innovative.
Dúirt Ó Cearúil:
“Fáiltím roimh an maoiniú suntasach seo a chuireann leis an maoiniú a d’fhógair an Aire sa Bhuiséid le déanaí.
Tá fíor tábhacht leis an teicneolaíocht le dul chun cinn an teanga agus tacóidh an maoiniú seo leis.”
He went on to say:
“This funding secures the long-term future of some of the most important Irish-language tools we have,
“It supports students, teachers, researchers, and communities across the country, while also embedding Irish in modern technologies.
“From AI and translation to classroom resources and digital archives, this investment protects our heritage, drives innovation, and helps the language thrive in the 21st century.”
The funding will support enhanced integration across Gaois platforms, improved search technologies, and structured datasets for AI.
The eSTÓR investment will maintain a national repository of bilingual material used across Government and by the European Commission’s eTranslation service.
Minister Calleary also launched the Irish-language version of AI Literacy in the Classroom - a free online course for post-primary teachers developed by the ADAPT Centre.
