Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications, Jack Chambers has welcomed the Minister for Communications commitment to review the needs of local radio stations considering ongoing pressures on the sector and the need to maintain high-quality information for the public to fight COVID-19.

Deputy Chambers said: “It is extremely welcome that the Minister for Communications has committed to an urgent review of what impact Covid19 is having on the local radio sector in light of requests made by Fianna Fáil.

“Social media and online platforms have been flooded with incorrect or incomplete news stories about the coronavirus. This has led to a host of issues including panic buying. In some cases, incorrect medical advice has been offered which is potentially harmful. It is vital that high quality public service broadcasting of all types is enhanced and protected to fight this false news at this time. It is vital that they are provided with targeted additional supports in the coming weeks.

“At this difficult time, it is vital that all lines of quality information are provided to the public. The dissemination of important messages on social distancing, protecting the elderly and immunocompromised and the harmful impact of stockpiling can be provided through local and regional radio,” concluded Deputy Chambers.
