Byrne calls for Govt intervention as Dunboyne jobs under threat

Meath East TD Thomas Byrne has expressed serious concern over the future of jobs at the Takeda plant in Co. Meath.  The Japanese Pharmaceutical giant has announced this afternoon that it is selling its Dunboyne facility as a going concern.

“The news that Takeda is pulling out of Dunboyne comes as major blow to Co Meath.  The pharmaceutical giant has only been in Dunboyne for a short time so it’s extremely concerning that they are selling so soon.  The employees in Dunboyne have only just learned the news and are now understandably very worried about their futures,” said Deputy Byrne

“These are highly-skilled pharmaceutical jobs that Co Meath and the North East region cannot afford to lose.   There is a potentially significant knock-on effect for the local economy if these jobs and the facility cannot be saved after Takeda leaves.

“Urgent Government intervention is required here.  I am calling on the Minister for Enterprise Heather Humphreys to outline what contact she has had with Takeda in the lead up to this afternoon’s announcement.  The staff at this facility need assurances that moves are underway to protect their jobs.  The community of Dunboyne also needs assurances about the future of the facility and the local economy.

“Takeda also operates facilities in Bray Co Wicklow and a number of locations in Dublin.  Staff at these facilities need assurances too.  Talks must get underway immediately between the company and the Government at the highest level.”
