No money drawn down for NeighbourWood scheme last year – Moynihan

Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West Michael Moynihan says he’s disappointed that no money was spent on woodland projects under the NeighbourWood Scheme last year.

The scheme, which was first established in 2014, provides funding for communities to develop woodland areas for public use.

Deputy Moynihan said, “The scheme has been relatively popular since it was introduced, but in a reply to a Parliamentary Question which I tabled to the Minister for Agriculture, no money was spent on projects in 2019, despite the Department receiving 5 applications – all of which were approved. It seems unusual that a project would be approved but the money not be drawn down.

“This scheme has been integral in the development of community woodlands, walks and picnic areas across the country and I believe it should be further enhanced.

“We have seen the success of greenways in Waterford and Mayo, especially in terms of tourism. We should be investing in nature projects which our on our doorsteps and making them accessible to our communities.

“Strengthening NeighbourWood Scheme vital as it brings communities together to enhance amenities which will benefit locals and tourists alike and creates new and interesting opportunities for towns and villages across the county, without any significant cost burden”.
