“The O’Donovan brothers have brought so much pride and joy to the people of West Cork with their win at the weekend at the World Rowing Championships,” said local TD, Margaret Murphy O’Mahony.
“Gary and Paul are an absolute credit to their parents, their family, their club, and to the entire Skibbereen community.
“Their victory now sets them apart and puts them into a group of very elite Irish athletes who have won gold on the world stage.
“Add in their Olympic Silver Medal and the O’Donovan Brothers are quite possibly some of the greatest athletes our small, but powerful, island has ever produced.
“Their dominance of their chosen sport is testament to their skill, determination and dedication. They are an inspiration to the young people of Ireland.
“The result of this, and Sanita Puspure’s victory, must be increased national funding to Rowing Ireland and our amazing rowers. It’s disgraceful that earlier this year there wasn’t enough funding to send some of our rowers to a world rowing event. That cannot happen again.
“We will all savour the weekend’s world glory, and we are all looking forward to even more victories for the men from West Cork,” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.
