Fianna Fáil Chief Whip and Arts Spokesperson Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD has called on Arts Minister Heather Humphreys to live up to her responsibilities as a Cabinet Minister and come forward to explain in full and take questions on the sequence of events leading up to the controversial appointment of FG Seanad candidate John McNulty on to the board of IMMA.
Fianna Fáil have submitted a formal request to the Ceann Comhairle to facilitate such an examination.
Deputy Ó Fearghaíl commented, “Where is Heather Humphreys? The Minister who was at the centre of this shabby affair and facilitated this flawed appointment has simply disappeared.
“One of the central responsibilities of a Cabinet Minister must surely be to explain their decisions to the public. And yet, Minister Humphreys has either been instructed by the Taoiseach or believes that it is appropriate to bury her head in the sand and avoid all questions about a controversy that has engulfed her Government and her party.
“The story from the Taoiseach has switched from ‘it was all Heather Humphreys’ responsibility’, to ‘the party officials made her do it’. To be frank, neither explanation inspires confidence in the judgement or decision making of the Minister, but I feel it important that she be given the opportunity to explain her side of the story.
“Whether or not the Ceann Comhairle accepts Fianna Fáil’s request, I believe the Minister should be proactively offering to come forward and explain and I would call on her again this morning to do so.”
