Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher TD has responded to claims that the Government is now set to formally abandon its disastrous policy on culling medical cards and reinstate the system it inherited in the first place.  A story leaked to The Irish Times from yesterday’s Cabinet claims that the Government will now return to localised discretionary decisions based on a person’s medical condition.

Deputy Kelleher commented, “Clearly the Government hopes that the Water crisis will deflect attention from this latest development in the medical card farce and they have chosen to sneak out details of the u-turn rather that acknowledge they were wrong.

“What this latest u-turn means is that the Cabinet have agreed to return to a system that they spent over a year claiming did not even exist and then the best part of another year criticising as the source of all sorts of problems.

“In the meantime, the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and their colleagues have wasted years of civil service time and untold millions in associated costs designing, implementing, and ultimately abandoning their centralised system.  Most importantly and most shamefully, they have caused misery for thousands of families and sick people across the country with this cruel and pointless experiment.”
