Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher TD has called on the Health Minister to spell out what steps he has taken to find out whether safety warnings apply only at Beaumont Hospital or whether concerns are mounting throughout the country.

Deputy Kelleher commented, “The fact that Mr Liam Duffy has gone public with his concerns about safety at his hospital is significant and is a courageous move on his part. This Government does not appreciate criticism. But what families across the country will be worrying about is the extent of the problems that Mr Duffy describes in other hospitals.

“The dysfunction and mismanagement of health policy by this Government over the last three years has caused chaos nationwide, so the idea that Beaumont Hospital is the only facility whose safety has been compromised, stretches credulity.

“We would like to hear from Minister Varadkar urgently on what steps he has taken to reassure himself about the safety situation in the country’s other major hospitals. To date, the new Health Minister has limited his contributions to distancing himself from the work of his predecessor and disowning the decisions he contributed to at cabinet since 2011.

“However, the stark safety warnings from the CEO of one of the country’s biggest hospitals is a crisis that needs to be addressed now – not at some unspecified time in the future. Patients in Beaumont and elsewhere need to know that these warnings are being taken seriously and need to hear from the person responsible what he plans to do about it.”
