Fianna Fáil Environment Spokesperson Niall Collins has said the announcement of the date for the Presidential election at a Fine Gael party event is wholly inappropriate and shows that Fine Gael does not respect the non-political nature of the office.
Deputy Collins commented, “At today’s convention the only topic addressed was how Fine Gael is entitled to win the Presidency and what the Presidency can do for Fine Gael. Using a party event to formally announce the date of the election is a disgrace and confirms Fine Gael’s growing arrogance in government.
“In the past Fine Gael loved nothing more than to accuse its opponents of being ‘tribal’. As can be seen from this convention, in government Fine Gael is tribal beyond anything seen from a government party in many years.”
