Fianna Fáil Justice Spokesperson, Jim O’Callaghan TD has said that the gun violence of the past 24 hours in Ireland’s capital tells us how brazen those involved have become.

The Deputy was commenting following the latest fatal shooting which took place beside a school in a densely populated North Dublin community this afternoon. Late last night another young man was fatally shot in North County Dublin.

“As details regarding this afternoon’s latest shooting continue to emerge and Gardaí work to establish a motive, what we certainly do know at this time is that depraved violence of this nature has no place whatsoever in our society,” he said.

“The prevalence of gun related violence has continued to intensify, and it is essential that all possible resources are provided to protect the public. This afternoon’s shooting took place near a national school and both staff and pupils are likely to have only made their way home in the hour or so before hand. That is a terrifying precedent.

“It is apparent that these shootings will continue unless there is adequate intervention. Condemnation is not enough. The Minister for Justice needs to immediately examine what extension of resources can be given to Gardaí to bring this outbreak of serious violence under control.

“To witness a shooting or hear about one occurring is not normal. We can never accept gun crime as an aspect of everyday life. No child or young person growing up in any community should be led to believe that firing a gun is reasonable.

“As a society that promotes lawfulness and prosperity, we cannot give into intimidation and senseless brutality. Dublin is a terrific city. Everyone who cares about our capital and the safety of all its people must ensure that this violence cannot and will not win out,” he concluded.
