Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Disability Margaret Murphy O’Mahony TD has said that the proposed budget cuts to Special Olympic funding in the budget proposed by US President Donald Trump is a cruel and unnecessary targeting of those with disabilities and special needs.
It is estimated that $17.6 million will be cut from Special Olympics funding by the Trump administration.
Deputy Murphy O’Mahony said, “The proposed cuts planned to be implemented by President Trump reach a new low in his presidency. It is shameful to take away such funding. Over 272,000 children will be affected by these cruel cuts.
“Around Ireland Special Olympians are returning home to their schools, day services, and communities having represented their country at the highest level. The Special Olympics showcase the abilities and camaraderie for those living with disabilities or special needs. I know from meeting participants it is a life changing and enriching experience.
“I trust the members of Congress in the United States will reject the shameful cuts,” concluded Deputy Murphy O’Mahony.
