Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children Robert Troy TD has welcomed the decision by the Supreme Court to uphold the result of the Children’s Referendum.
Deputy Troy commented, “I welcome the decision by the Supreme Court to uphold the result of the Children’s Referendum held in November 2012. It is a positive development that ensures the will of the people is recognised and the referendum can now be implemented.
“It is important that there are no further delays in enshrining children’s rights in our constitution now that the Supreme Court has made its decision. I strongly urge the Minister to expedite the passage of the legislation to give effect to the referendum. We do not want another generation of children growing up without the benefit of the provisions of the legislation.
“This challenge would not have arisen if the Government had ensured it published impartial material during the referendum campaign. The Government needs to investigate this failure and ensure that those responsible for raising this very serious question mark over the validity of a very serious constitutional change are held accountable” said Deputy Troy.
