Fianna Fáil TD for Longford – Westmeath Robert Troy has been selected by party members to contest the forthcoming General Election.
More than 250 part members gathered at the Mullingar Park Hotel for the Westmeath selection convention. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Environment and Local Government Barry Cowen TD chaired the convention.
Speaking following the convention Deputy Troy commented, “It is a great honour to be selected by the local organisation in Westmeath to contest the next General Election on behalf of Fianna Fáil. I look forward to working with members to ensure Fianna Fáil maximises its representation for this constituency in the next Dáil.
“This is a tremendously important election for not only Longford – Westmeath but also the entire country. People are continuing to struggle on a daily basis due to the regressive and unfair policies pursued by Fine Gael and Labour. The Government is in the habit of talking up the economic recovery which is centred in Dublin, but it is doing little to revitalise our towns and villages in Longford and Westmeath.
“Fine Gael and Labour have no plan or vision for our towns and villages. They are solely focussed on trying to stay in power. Businesses are continuing to struggle in the face of bureaucratic red tape, excessive start-up costs and poor infrastructure. Boarded up shop fronts are all too common in our communities as a result of the Government’s failure to support local enterprise.
“The Government has also targeted the most vulnerable for savings since it came to power. Disability services have been cut, education supports have been eroded and our health system is worse than ever. Meanwhile Fine Gael and Labour continue to be pre-occupied with trying to introduce cuts to the top rate while services are collapsing, families struggle to meet basic bills and the number of children in poverty doubles.
“Fine Gael and Labour simply do not understand the major issues facing young couples trying to start out in life. As Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children I have seen first-hand how families are struggling to cope with excessive childcare costs. In many cases couples are essentially paying a second mortgage just to ensure that their children get the start they deserve in life. Fianna Fáil has put forward a detailed and credible childcare policy which we are ready to implement if in Government.
“Fianna Fáil is the only party that is offering the people of Ireland a realistic plan for the future. We continue to fight for a strong middle ground, where we foster enterprise and create jobs, but we never forget our obligation to those who need an extra help. I look forward to continuing my campaign on the ground to ensure Longford – Westmeath returns a strong Fianna Fáil team to Dáil Éireann.
