Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has condemned Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s continued silence on the recent controversy surrounding the media coverage of Dáil statements.  Almost one week on from when the incident began, the Taoiseach has still not said a word in response to a threat to the constitutional protection of Dáil privilege.

Deputy Martin commented, “We are pleased the courts have confirmed that the media continue to be free to report on proceedings in the Dáil.  However, this does not take away from the scale of the threat that this basic right faced.

“Looking back over the past week, one of the most striking and disconcerting features of what has happened has been the utter failure of Taoiseach Enda Kenny to provide even basic leadership on the issue.  His silence on the controversy has been deafening.

“At a basic level, the fact that he has been in Dáil Éireann longer than anyone else should have alerted him to how outrageous the situation was.  The fact that he is the Leader of Government placed an onus on him to speak out and reassert the centrality and status of the Dáil in our Republic.

“Through his silence on this controversy, the Taoiseach has failed citizens in a very basic way.  When he finally faces questions and is unable to hide from the issue any further, I look forward to his explanation of why he was afraid to speak up.”
