Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has responded to Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s comments this evening where he claims to take responsibility for the Seanad Bye-Election debacle.

Deputy Martin commented, “After a sustained campaign to deny any responsibility for the botched appointment of John McNulty to IMMA, the Taoiseach has now shifted ground and claims to take full responsibility for the mess and has apologised.

“This begs a number of questions, the most obvious of which is, what exactly is he apologising for?

“Is the Taoiseach now admitting that he instructed Minister Heather Humphreys to appoint Mr McNulty in support of his Seanad candidacy?

“This goes to the heart of the scandal and requires a full statement in Dáil Éireann from the Taoiseach outlining the entire sequence of events from the beginning to the end of this shabby affair.

“In addition, I believe that the Taoiseach needs to make a specific apology to the board of IMMA and the membership and staff of Seanad Éireann.  The Taoiseach has undermined both organisations with how he has handled this.”
