The Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children Robert Troy has said the Supreme Court’s judgement on the Government’s breach of the McKenna judgement in the Children’s Referendum is a severe indictment of an increasingly arrogant Cabinet.
In an initial reaction to the judgement, Deputy Troy said “Minister Fitzgerald and the Government clearly thought that the rules don’t apply to them – that they were above the Constitution at the same time as trying to amend it.
“More than €1 million was spent by the government on this breach of the Constitution, a breach that could have jeopardised the passage of the proposed amendment.
“Minister Fitzgerald needs to provide a full account to the Dáil of her actions in this matter. I have tried on numerous occasions, including today, to raise it as a Topical Issue in the Dáil.  So far it has not been selected.  I will continue to raise it until it is selected and the Minister gives a full explanation.”
