Fianna Fáil Justice Spokesperson Jim O’Callaghan has said that legislation to give greater powers to the Policing Authority is crucial to dealing with the issues that have emerged within An Garda Síochána.
The Deputy made the comments in advance of the party’s Private Members Business motion which will the debated in the Dáil later this evening.
Deputy O’Callaghan commented, “An Garda Síochána plays a vital role in Irish society and there is an immediate need for public representatives to do what they can to rebuild public trust in the institution.
“Full public confidence in the processes and procedures around Garda oversight is a critical component of effective policing in Ireland and we believe that decisive action must be taken to implement real reform and cultural change within An Garda Síochána.
“Today’s motion is Fianna Fáil’s contribution to that process and is aimed at expanding and strengthening the powers available to the Policing Authority, to hold the force to account and ensure we achieve and maintain the highest possible standards.”
