Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has paid tribute to outgoing British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland James Brokenshire following his resignation from the post. Mr Brokenshire has resigned for personal health reasons.
Deputy Martin commented, “On my own behalf and on behalf of the Fianna Fáil Party, I would like to thank Mr Brokenshire for his service in the North and wish him well as he focuses on his personal health.
“Mr Brokenshire’s tenure has coincided with a period of real instability in Northern Ireland, with the destabilising effect of Brexit and the decision on the part of Sinn Féin to collapse the Executive and Assembly contributing to political paralysis there.
“Through all this, and in all of my dealings with him, he never allowed any sense of frustration to surface and he maintained a commitment to try and put the process back on track.
“He is now stepping away from the role to focus on his personal health and I wish him and his family well in that.”
