Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan/Monaghan and Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence, Brendan Smith has expressed his condolences following the death of Kevin McNamara, former British Labour MP of almost 40 years.
Deputy Smith said, “I was privileged to work closely with Kevin on the British/Irish Inter Parliamentary Body and he was a powerful, sincere and dedicated advocate for justice, fairness and peace on these islands.
“Kevin worked tirelessly for peace in Ireland and he was a great friend to this country during those very difficult years.
“He had an incredible historical knowledge of this country, held a distinct interest in Irish affairs and shared a unique insight into the complex political relationships on this island.
“In the many meetings held with other public representatives, community groups or representative organisations, be they in London, Dublin, Belfast, Derry or in the border region, Kevin’s absolute, lifelong commitment to the advancement of the peace process was always greatly apparent.
“May he Rest In Peace,” concluded Deputy Smith.
