Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children & Youth Affairs Anne Rabbitte says the discovery of human remains on the site of a former Mother and Baby home in Tuam, Co, Galway is extremely sad and deeply worrying.

The remains were discovered as part of work undertaken by the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, which is scheduled to release its final report next year.

Deputy Rabbitte commented, “This latest discovery is extremely distressing and will no doubt evoke painful memories for the women and children who spent time in Mother and Baby Homes.  I want to commend the members of the Commission for the compassion with which they have undertaken their work, as well as paying tribute to the women who have come forward to share their stories.

“The Commission’s work is continuing and I would like to encourage people who were resident in, or who worked in any of the Mother and Baby Homes or County Homes, which are covered under the terms of reference to come forward.

“The treatment of mothers and children in these homes marks a dark chapter in our country’s history. If we want to ensure a proper child protection environment into the future, we need to fully understand the mistakes of the past”.
