I am deeply saddened by the death of my former colleague and friend Michael Fitzpatrick.
Michael represented the people of Kildare North with unwavering commitment. He was truly honoured to be elected to Dáil Éireann in 2007, having served on Kildare County Council from 1999 and as Mayor of Kildare 2003 – 2004.
A native of Coothill, Co Cavan, Michael dedicated his life to public service. He joined An Garda Síochána in 1961 and was stationed in Robertstown, Co. Kildare, Tullow, Co. Carlow and Athy.
Michael was a true gentleman. He never took for granted the honour of being a member of Dáil Éireann. His honesty and generosity of spirit earned him the respect of all sides of the House. He will be sadly missed.
I wish to extend my sympathies to Michael’s wife Maureen and his son Daragh.
