It is with sadness that I learned of the death of Galway journalist John Cunningham.
John was regarded as one of the best local newspaper Editors and columnists in the country. He had an unparalleled insight into local politics and always approached every issue with balance and fairness. John was highly respected by everyone he worked with, in the media, in politics and in the community.
John was Editor of the Connacht Tribune for more than 25 years and wrote for the paper as the ‘The Deputy’ after that. His love of his work and his dedication to his readers was such that he continued to write his column until last week.
John Cunningham will be missed, not only for his depth of knowledge and understanding of local politics, but also for his good humour and approachability.
I wish to extend my sympathies and that of the Fianna Fáil party to John’s wife Nuala and their four children at this difficult time.
