Fianna Fáil General Election Candidate in Dublin Central, Mary Fitzpatrick has said all suitable State owned lands in Dublin Central must be used as part of an Affordable Housing Scheme to give Dubliners the opportunity to own their own home.

The Local Representative was commenting following last night’s Dáil debate on Fianna Fáil’s Private Members Business motion on delivering more affordable housing.

She said, “In the past seven years not only has the price of homes rocketed by 90%, not one single affordable home has been built in Dublin Central.

“The development of housing units in inner city communities where supply is weakest and prices are highest is crucial for the working families who are forking out taxes but currently priced out of the market in Dublin.

“The crisis in home ownership will continue to worsen without intensifying efforts to build affordable homes. An Affordable Housing Scheme should be used by Government to start to deliver on its commitment to deliver affordable homes.

“The scheme must fully utilise State-owned lands such as O’Devaney Gardens, the regeneration sites on Dominic Street, and the site of the former Magdalene Laundry on Sean McDermott Street which are all prime locations in popular areas where property is highly sought after.

“Fianna Fáil is committed to supporting those who are struggling to secure home ownership.

“We will continue to put pressure on this Government to develop these lands in Dublin Central to provide affordable homes” she concluded.
