Ba mhaith liom fáilte chuig Parlaimint na hEorpa a chur roimh an Taoiseach agus guím gach ratha air sna míonna atá amach romhainn.
The Presidency should provide the Government with an opportunity to give practical effect to the June 2012 agreement by EU leaders to break the link between the sovereign and private bank debt. The issue of the promissory note must also be dealt with as quickly as possible as this is a matter of great importance to Ireland and confidence in the Irish economy. During its Presidency, the Irish Government will have to conclude the EU budget for the period 2014 to 2020. A strong and robust budget for the Common Agricultural Policy is vital, as is, the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.
As a border county MEP, I would also like to emphasise the importance of renewing the Peace III programme. The Peace programme between the period 2007 to 2013 has contributed over EUR 225 million in support of social inclusion projects in the border counties and Northern Ireland. I would urge the Taoiseach to play a leading role to ensure that the Peace programme is renewed after 2014. This will further help to develop peace and reconciliation on the island of Ireland.
