Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has welcomed the allocation of additional funding for the Government’s anti-illegal dumping initiative. Cavan and Monaghan County Councils are set to benefit from an additional €22,000 to clamp down on illegal dumping.
Deputy Smyth commented, “I am pleased that Minister Naughten has realised the extent of the problem facing our towns, villages, rivers, lakes and scenic areas when it comes to illegal dumping. These acts of vandalism result have health, environmental and economic implications for communities and unfortunately the situation has deteriorated over the last few years.
“This additional funding needs to be invested in monitoring and surveillance of litter blackspots so that offenders can be apprehended and prosecuted. Unless there is an adequate deterrent, people will continue to discard their waste.
“I hope Cavan and Monaghan County Councils will use this funding to tackle this scourge, clean up our beauty spots and restore pride in our local community areas”.
