Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has receive confirmation from the National Council for Special Education that a new Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) class will open before the end of 2019.
It had been feared that delays would not see the class ready until September 2020.
Deputy Smyth, “I am very pleased that the latest news from the National Council for Special Education is so positive – this will come as a huge relief for parents in the Ballyjamesduff area, and further afield. This has been a long road for the school, and particularly for Noeleen and Aoibhinn Smith, who have kept the campaign going.
“This ASD class will make a huge difference to parents and children with autism across south Cavan who have been having great difficulty in securing a place in a school with an ASD unit.
“According to the NCSE, “it is envisaged that the new special class [in St. Clare’s] will open towards late 2019”. This is a major improvement on the September 2020 date, which had been mooted.
“I hope that all of the parties involved in this project will work together to ensure that this ASD unit can be rolled out on schedule so that children can begin their classes in the 2019/20 school year. I will be continuing to work with the school to provide whatever supports it needs to get this project across the line on time”.
