Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has called on the Minister for Justice and Garda Commissioner to direct extra resources to Cavan-Monaghan following last nights ATM theft in Castleblayney, County Monaghan.
There have been seven ATM robberies in the border region and Northern Ireland this year.
Deputy Smyth commented, “There were dreadful scenes in Castleblayney over night as the thieves used a digger to rip an ATM from a bank on our main street.
“These criminal actions, which are not isolated, are causing terror in our constituency. Our small towns and villages, such as Kingscourt and Ballybay, are paralyzed by these criminals and more resources are needed. We need extra Garda presence in the area to stop these criminals but also provide peace of mind to residents in the area.
“Our Garda numbers have been depleted. I understand the entire numbers in the division in Cavan-Monaghan is 356 at the end of January 2019 whereas in 2010 this number was closer to 400.
“I am calling on the Minister for Justice to work with his Department and senior Garda management to ensure resources are in place for our Garda force in Cavan-Monaghan,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
