Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Brendan Smith says the suspension of the strike at Bus Éireann is good news for the travelling public across the two counties.
The industrial action was suspended after the Labour Court issued a recommendation aimed at resolving the dispute between unions and management.
Deputy Smith commented, “This afternoon’s announcement will come as a huge relief to bus passengers across Cavan and Monaghan who have had to make alternative arrangements over the past three weeks. It’s particularly welcome as it comes ahead of the Easter bank holiday weekend, when many people would be travelling to see family and friends.
“Cavan and Monaghan have been disproportionately impacted by this industrial action as there are no rail links in either county and passengers have had to rely solely on private bus operators.
“I very much welcome the progress that has been made over the past number of days and I hope that a permanent solution can be reached. The commitment by NBRU that its members will return to work pending the outcome of a ballot on the Labour Court recommendation means that services should be up and running by tomorrow afternoon.
“The industrial action is clearly in no one’s best interests and suspending the strike is the right thing to do”.
