The Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Border Region Development Brendan Smith TD has met with the Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary of State Ivan Lewis MP at Leinster House to discuss the current situation in the North.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD raised the issue of barriers to agreement on the Haass process. He also re-iterated the pressing need to get the truth for the families of those killed in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.
Deputy Smith commented, “The discussions, following on from last week’s meeting with Secretary of State Villiers offered a chance to hear an alternative British perspective on the current situation in Northern Ireland.
“I made absolutely clear Fianna Fáil’s continued support for the peace process and we had a detailed discussion on where the process currently stood and our mutual interest in advancing the process. We both agreed on the importance of both governments playing an active role in driving forward the peace process.
“We also took the opportunity to raise the continuing need for truth on the Dublin and Monaghan bombings. Mr. Lewis agreed to meet with families affected by that devastating atrocity over the coming months. This is particularly important with the 40th anniversary of the atrocity approaching, it is the time must finally have come for the families to get answers.”
