Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon has welcomed comments from the Minister for Social Protection encouraging those with difficulties regarding Illness Benefit Payments to attend their Social Welfare Offices for assistance with interim payments but warned the wider problem remains.
Deputy Scanlon commented “Last week I raised with the Minister the ordeal of one constituent who has been waiting over six months for their Illness Benefit Payment to normalise. On the back of this debate it is welcome to see the Minister respond to similar queries by directing applicants to their community welfare service for payment in the immediate.
“Finance that can be provided in the interim from the local community welfare service will ease anxieties of those with upcoming mortgage payments or direct debits. However, the issue is ongoing and appears not to be easing. There are 100’s of my constituents affected by ill thought out policy changes which has only caused them grief,” concluded Deputy Scanlon.
