The Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has called on the Justice Minister Alan Shatter to immediately order publication of the Garda Inspectorate Report prepared in the aftermath of the recent penalty points controversy within An Garda Siochána.
The report would, Fianna Fáil believes, quickly cut through the spin and obfuscation being created by Government sources to delay a full apology from Minister Shatter to Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.
Deputy Martin commented, “There are various strands to the current controversy surrounding Alan Shatter. The Government is working hard to introduce confusion where it can, but one element is absolutely clear – Alan Shatter misled Dáil Éireann and did an injustice to Sgt Maurice McCabe when he claimed that he had not co-operated with the internal Garda inquiry into penalty points irregularities.
“It is our belief that the Minister has access to a report which can immediately settle the issue – the Garda Inspectorate Report prepared following his referral of the issue to the Inspectorate at that time. The Minister should order publication of this report immediately and if he refuses, he must explain why. He should also explain whether he has shared the report with colleagues, including colleagues from the Labour Party.”
