Cork North Central Fianna Fáil TD Billy Kelleher has described as shameless and deeply cynical the revelation that the orthopaedic services at St Mary’s Hospital are to move to the South Infirmary Victoria Hospital, Cork despite an election pledge to the community from the now Health Minister Dr. James Reilly.

“During the election campaign, in a blatant attempt to shore up support and win votes the now Minister for Health Dr. James Reilly made an explicit commitment that no services would be withdrawn from St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital.  Comfortably in office the Minister has now decided to turn his back on the community and his commitment.”

“There will be deep anger in the community at the Minister’s complete u-turn on this issue.”

“I will be raising this issue with the Minister in the Dáil and I am urging him to make a statement and apologise to the community for his cynical election pledge,” concluded Deputy Kelleher.
