Fianna Fáil Senator Paschal Mooney has welcomed news that Ryanair may expand its operation at Dublin airport.
Senator Mooney was reacting to reports this week that Ryanair is seeking to add to its capacity at the airport this September.
“News that Ryanair is actively seeking to expand its capacity at Dublin airport is welcome. This move should be wholly supported by the Government and direct negotiations must now take place to ensure that planned expansion by the airline materialises.
“As a member of the Transport and Tourism Committee, I know the massive benefits that Ryanair and other airlines bring to the Irish economy. As an island nation, the airline industry is vital to the success of the tourism sector. Ryanair is a valuable player in attracting hundreds of thousands of people to the country each year.
“It is important that the possibility of all airline carriers expanding is explored, I would like to see the Minister for Transport actively engaging with airline carriers and other airports to see what can be done to expand their operations. For example, Ryanair provides an important service at Knock International airport that it vital to the tourism of the North West, the possibility of extending the number of services here should also be explored.
“I am also calling on the DAA to ensure that the required conditions are put in place to support the proposals by Ryanair. While I am not advocating any preferential treatment for Ryanair, all interested parties must be open to facilitate the expansion.”
