Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív has expressed his disappointment that only one pier in Galway has been included in the 2015 programme for the repair and development of Local Authority piers.  This is a significant drop from last year and shows the lack of commitment by the Government to this type of vital infrastructure affecting coastal communities.

Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív explained, “Only one pier in Galway has been approved for funding under this scheme.  Céibh an tSrutháin, An Cheathru Rua is the one pier in the county to have received money to construct a berthing wall and to upgrade the existing slip-way.  While this funding is extremely welcome, it is extremely disappointing that no other piers have been included under the programme. These local authority piers are used by the majority of fishing boats under 10 metres, which represent 80% of the national fleet.

“This is another example of this Government’s lack of commitment to rural communities. It’s failing to invest in vital infrastructure and small rural communities are paying the price.  Minister Simon Coveney has clearly demonstrated that the Marine division of his portfolio is only of secondary importance to him and does not warrant the investment that is afforded to the Agriculture sector.

“This continued focus on Dublin and the commuter region at the expense of the rest of the country is deeply worrying.  Investment in rural Ireland is being sorely neglected, to the detriment of families and communities living there.  This injustice needs to be rectified – rural Ireland cannot be allowed to be treated as a second thought.  These communities deserve better”.
